โ€œThere is a saying in Tibetan, 'Tragedy should be utilised as a source of strength.'

Thank you, Susie. That means a lot, coming from you. Your quote reminds me of Joanna Macy talking about meeting the Tibetans in exile and being struck by how happy they were. Their ability to be joyful in any circumstance inspired her lifelong activism for nuclear disarmament and environmental causes.

Tibetans are an extraordinary people, I can quite see how someone, anyone would be inspired by them. They seem to smile through life no matter what it brings them.

I love your description of hope as a "holy force." It seems inseparable from beauty and all things in nature..

โ€œThe greatest danger to our planet is we loose hope.โ€ Jane Goodall. Hope is having a plan for a better future and striving for it. It may be quixotic but what other life can there be.

Well said. What would we be reserving hope for if not in defense of life?

Beautiful essays, Julie. I find it hard to find language to tackle a comment and you have woven language through each line to deepen our journeys. The Eli quotes bring in compelling perspectives, her acknowledgement of hope as something external that we tap into, that it is the propellent for our actions to make change. Both ideas counter the common discount of hope as somehow passive. Despair is passive, hope reaches and looks beyond now. Thank you.

Yes! Thatโ€™s it! Despair is the passive one. To give into it is a choice. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Leslie. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿค

I so enjoy these essays, Julie. I think it's the thoughtfulness about how to be that I appreciate most. I'm realizing that I don't need to try to find a line of the poem to apply to each day or situation, but I do have the option to slow down, look at what's happening at any moment, and decide which of my values I want to apply.
