I love the line "...experiences like this, by those that really solidify just how powerless we are in comparison to the Earth, not in a disempowering way but in a humbling, grounding way" - nature can truly humble and ground us. It's experiences such as those you mention that truly convey the power that spending even just a few minutes outdoors can bring about. Thank you for sharing.
Great interview. Kate, that story about the lightning is so vivid. What a formative memory. And I love the story about your dad and the lawnmower when you were so little. Itās really sweet to envision.
Thank you both for this interview and thank you for the recommendations, Kate.
This was so interesting to read and so calming as if you both breathed the connection to nature into your this interview. I found the difference between Nature writing and Environmental writing interesting as I write my own nature blog on Wordpress. I think I started more with nature, botany then into memoir which seemed to get me more readers and then more environmental commentary. I guess it has become a mix with somewhere to share my poetry, novel and life trying to live close and with awareness to nature. I am very interested in connecting people and a closely to nature and have started some workshops with school students. As yet I have not really had time to develop my substack as Wordpress works well for me with photos. My nature blog is navasolanature@wordpress.com and my novel is Navaselva, the Call of the Wild Valley. Maybe it could stir me to make more links in substack if you wished to interview me. I think it is so important to have strong networks to help others become more aware and to support each other. Thanks for this lovely inspirational interview.
